Volunteers and our domestic abuse services

Our volunteers play a valuable role in the provision of our domestic abuse services, supporting victims and families through their diverse range of skills and experience.

We know that experts by experience bring precious insight into the development and application of our services, which is why we welcome and encourage survivors of domestic abuse to step forward as Foundation volunteers.

As a volunteer, you’ll help us to shape our services in a number of easy, through participation in many positions and activities, such as:

  • Trustees
  • Consultation events
  • Promotional and awareness raising events
  • Acting as befrienders to victims coping with and recovering from their experience of abuse
  • Fundraising
  • Planning recreational activities.

Whatever your particular skills and interests, we’ll do our best to find a role to suit you and our clients.

Our risk assessments, ongoing support and stress management plans ensure that exposure to people with similar experience is not harmful to the overall wellbeing of our volunteers.

In addition to our volunteers from a domestic abuse background, we are also looking for:

  • Community volunteers from universities.
  • Community volunteers – we advertise volunteering opportunities through local volunteer bureaus e.g. the Redcar and Cleveland Voluntary Development Agency (RCVDA), Durham Community Action and JobCentre Plus.
  • Under-represented groups in local communities – we particularly encourage these applicants.

In recognition of our esteemed former colleague, we have established the Janet King Memorial Fund, in recognition of the work Janet did during her 25 years in refuge provision in Redcar and Cleveland. This fund is used to support women moving back into the community from our refuge.
